43.33% DU Students are Smoker!

University Campus as Smoking Ground

Tobacco is a curse for civilization that snaps away not only the dreams of a nation but also the future of a nation. In developed countries tobacco companies are coming under increasing pressure to shrink their business because of raising consciousness against smoking. So now the companies are now targeting least developed countries as their business hub. Cigarettes are on sale in almost all kinds of shops in Bangladesh and our young generation, especially the students, are the direct prey of the lurking danger of smoking.

Much has been said about taking measures to curb smoking, but in reality, things are taking a turn for the worse. Smokers are apparently on the rise in almost all university campuses, irrespective of public or private. Against such a backdrop, the University Grand Commission (UGC) has taken some steps to make university campuses tobacco free. UGC requested to set up signboard or placard against smoking on campus. Besides it also urged to arrange regular seminar to raise awareness against smoking. Ironically these requests fell on deaf ears. According to the present UGC law, taking any kind of tobacco in university campus is illegal, but who cares!

In a recent research on Dhaka University students, it was found that 43.33% of its total students are smoker.

In another research led by Dhaka university political science department professor Dr Emran Hosain, it is stated that in whole campus, DU students spend 3 million 68 thousands 305 taka on smoking. The research show that 63.84 % of students smoke without any specific reason and 23.07% are compelled to smoke out of disappointment and 9.23% smoke for having extraordinary feeling and shamefully 3.84% of student smoke as they think it increases their smartness.

In this research, the whole campus was divided into five zones and there is difference in the number of smokers. Most of the Fine Arts students are inclined to be smoker as their 80 % of students of the institute smoke regularly. After that, the second place is gained by Business Faculty as 75% of the student smoke there and in Art’s building area 72% of the student are regular smoker while 48% smoke in Karjon Hall. Similar picture is true for the student of ANEX building area as the 47% of their students are smoker but somehow it is satisfactory that in IRI 28 % of the students are smoker.
