BKSP - Institute of Sports!

Bangladesh Krira Shiksha Pratisthan (BKS
In typical academic institution, students get little time to play, but what if it be other way around, where playing time reigns supreme and students learn as they play? It must be like dream comes true for any sport lovers, and this dream destination is Bangladesh Krira Shiksha Protishthan (BKSP).
Many leading cricketers have come out from this institution like Naimur Rahman Durjoy, top all-rounder of the world Shakib Al hasan, present National Cricket Team captain Mushfiqur Rahim and many others. Aside from cricketers, BKSP churns out skilled professionals for other sports too. Commonwealth Gold medalist shooter Asif Hossain Khan and prominent hockey player Rasel Mahmud were former students of BKSP.
BKSP is the national sports institute of Bangladesh. It is residential and is located at Savar, about 28 km north-west of Dhaka city. The institute was established in 1986 with the objective of developing sports in Bangladesh. It is an autonomous institution managed by a Board of Governors headed by the Minister of Youth and Sports. The Director General is the chief executive of the institute. The Government-funded autonomous institute is located at Savar, near the capital Dhaka. Students are accommodated in four hostels for the boys and one for girls. In addition to accommodation, students are given food, medical treatment and sports materials. However, the students have to pay tuition fees which is determined on the basis of the income of the guardian.
BKSP admits students in different areas of sports such as athletics, basketball, cricket, football, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, shooting and tennis. Basic training programme is of maximum eight years for athletics, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, shooting, tennis. Students under thirteen years of age are admitted to class VII. But in the categories of boxing, gymnastics and swimming students below ten years of age are admitted to class IV. However, the age limit can be relaxed in case of exceptionally promising candidates.
As sports hour is restricted at home and school, BKSP is the only place where one can receive institutional training to become professional sportsman.
About the training hours of sports and class hours for formal education in this residential sports academy, BKSP trainer Md Ashrafuzzaman says: "Sports training generally continues from 7 am to 9 am and from 3pm to 5pm., whereas institutional educations are taught from 9.30 am to 1 pm and from 6.30 pm to 8 pm."
Every year students are enrolled here according to the vacancy of seats. Admission seekers’ age is also taken into consideration to divide them into different groups. Admission circular is published on the newspaper and interested students have to send application along with CV and photograph.
Students are enrolled in 17 different events like cricket, hokey, basketball, football, gymnastics, boxing, swimming, tennis, shooting, judo, karate, archery, table tennis, volleyball and so on. Only girls can apply in archery. Both girls and boys can apply into seven disciplines which are cricket, athletics, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, judo and shooting, while the rest of the nine disciplines are open for boys only.
Of the 17 sports, cricket, hokey, basketball, football, athletics, judo, archery and volleyball are open for candidates who are in class seven. While pupils are taken in for boxing, gymnastics, swimming and tennis from students of class four to six.
According to co-director of BKSP Shamima Aktar Mimo three steps are followed in admission process. These are primary selection, training for the primary selected students and final selection.
For admission, applicants have to remain present there physically on scheduled time. Then applicants have to do registration and then medical and fitness test will be conducted. Only selected students can participate in practical test. Students have to bring their passport size photograph and sports kits.
BKSP selectors will select students considering their expertise in practical field and will arrange a five day long training camp for the eligible candidates. And then it is time for the final test. A 100 marks test will be taken where 40 marks in written and 60 in practical. Experienced trainers scrutinise the practical examination. Suppose in cricket, bating, bowling and fielding skills will be tested. Questions for written test may appear from general curriculum regarding the candidates’ grade.
After final selection, students are sent to different training fields according to their choice. Students have to pay Tk. 5,000 as admission fee. And after every three months a certain amount of course fee has to be paid. Promising but poor students are taken special care. There are trainers both from Bangladesh and foreign countries.
Students who perform well get a chance to play in local and international tournaments. And those who can prove their mettle there are selected for national teams. What follows are fame and money!
