Have you ever thought of such kind of electric meter that can be controlled by your mobile phone, send its status in your mobile phone, have prepaid-postpaid package system and save you from giving wraithlike electricity bill!! It's now possible.

Three students of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) have recently invented Universal Smart Energy Meter which they hope that will solve the load-shedding problem in Bangladesh. The students are - Masum Billah (EEE 4th year), Labib (EEE 4th year) and GM Sultan Mahmud Rana (Mechanical 4th year). Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam of EEE department was the coordinator of the project.

So what do you know about smart meters? The term Smart meter often refers to an electricity meter, but it also may mean a device measuring natural gas or water consumption. Similar meters, usually referred to as interval or time-of-use meters, have existed for years, but "Smart Meters" usually involve real-time or near real-time sensors, power outage notification, and power quality monitoring. These additional features are more than simple automated meter reading (AMR). They are similar in many respects to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters. Interval and time-of-use meters historically have been installed to measure commercial and industrial customers, but may not have automatic reading.

Using the meter you can monitor every per unit bill of yours, every watt which is really remarkable for Bangladesh perspective where millions of Taka wastes for the thievery of corrupted persons of the electricity company or other local powerful persons who thieves electricity from the main line.

How the meter works? The meter has three units - power measurement unit, display unit and remote communication unit. From the name of the unit, you can easily imagine what they do. This power management unit gathers data (voltage, electricity, power factor etc) from the main power line. Display unit displays the result gathered and account balance. And remote communication unit helps to control the meter using GSM Module and sending SMS.

Inventors said that, users can change package (prepaid to postpaid or postpaid to prepay) by sending one single message. Other settings can be also done by messaging. If users crosses the using limit, after 3 times signaling the meter will automatically disconnect the line. Such types of many other options are also available in the system.
