What Are You Doing on Summer Vacation!

Summer Vacation Planning
The blistering summer is here again. In Bangladesh, summer vacation begins in mid-May and ends in mid June (4 weeks). According to Bengali calendar summer vacation related with availability of different kinds of summer fruits in the month of Joishtho (mid May to mid June). Also it's become very uncomfortable for children to stay in class during extreme warm-humid weather.
When we think of summer, an image of nice long vacation pops up in our mind. Several universities including Jahangirnagar University, Islamic University, RUET and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology have already been closed for summer vacation; the rest will follow suit soon.
For students, this vacation is a respite from exhausting class assignments, term paper submission, tutorial and final exams. Many of them look forward to this time of the year to enjoy a full month of freedom. There are no burdens. Relaxation restores state of well-being. However, if you find this relaxation too much then you feel bored.
But instead of passing a lazy summer it is important that you do something meaningful to stay sharp and to add some more value to your life. Ok, the vacation is not too long… but the point is, be productive- even just a little. Spending summer vacation learning valuable work skills that can last a lifetime is priceless!
Working on your computer literacy, English fluency, or reading some good books, writing short stories, learning to play violin - what you will do is up to you. But if you cannot decide on your own then maybe some of the following ideas might just be for you.
Volunteer
Not only can it be fun and enjoyable and you at least have something to do for a couple of hours a week or a day, it'll look awesome on your job resume. Student volunteers are of great service in recent times especially in supporting disaster victims or educating disadvantaged children. Join hand with a charity organisation or a club in your university who do such jobs. Volunteer work can be an excellent way to gain experience.
Sign up for a value added course
In this age of competitiveness a degree is no more enough to land a decent job. So equip yourself with additional qualifications that match your interest and field of studies.
If you are thinking of going abroad after your graduation for higher studies you better sign up for any of this standardised tests - IELTS, TOFEL, GRE or GMAT.
Work on your online profile
If you do not already have a LinkedIn account, create one and utilise the summer free time to scrutinise any other online profiles. You should make sure that your profiles are appropriate and attractive to potential employers. Any information, images and contacts that are negative or controversial should be deleted.
Employers are turning to social media to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for hire. So instead of killing time in facebook, create a strong resume in LinkedIn and build connections with professionals.
What about an adventure camp!
This is an awesome way to get out of day to day schedule for a couple of weeks and discover a new talent such as trekking or exploring the beauty of the country. For that you can join a travelling club like Vromon Bangladesh or team up with your friends.
Take a week off
It's also important that you take time this summer to relax and recharge. Experts say students will be more productive if they take the time for themselves and reboot before heading into the semester.
In that time you can finalise schedules, organise your planner, buying necessary tools, etc. That time off will make sure the semester doesn't sneak up on you!
So make this vacation entertaining as well as useful.
