Club Introduction of DU English Department Students

The Department of English is as old as Dhaka University itself. Apart from academic glories, it has been making its mark in extracurricular enhancement from the very beginning. At present, as many as six clubs are operating in the department with their individual fields.

First on count, the Drama Club is engaged in staging plays of great playwrights along with plays written by students and teachers. It has successfully staged most of William Shakespeare’s tragedies and comedies, along with plays of great dramatists like Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, William Congreve, Sophocles and others. The club stages various dramas in the annual culture program, orientation program and special programs like the Shakespeare Festival.

Coming up second, the Debate Club holds debate within batches and other departments of the university. They also take part in debate competitions in and outside the country.

The Film Club is also very active in filming short videos. It has made several documentaries on Shakespeare along with making interesting clips. Recently the club has made documentaries on Professor Kabir Chowdhury, Prof Dr Razia Khan Amin, Prof Dr Khan Sarwar Murshid and Prof Dr Khandker rezaur Rahman, who all left us in the recent years.

Next, the Literary Club is another success. It conducts sessions with eminent persons and international literary figures. It has been arranging workshops and competitions like storytelling, impromptu speech and presentations since long. It is currently working on arranging a World Literature Seminar.

The fifth club is the English Department Sports Club, which has a legacy of success. It has won innumerable trophies in football, cricket, handball, hockey and volleyball tournaments. Most importantly, it has the record of winning the Basketball Champion Trophy for consecutive five times.

The sixth club of the department is "Krishnuchura", a club which nurtures Bengali literature in the department. It colourfully aranges the "Pahela Baishakh", "Pahela Falgun", "Robindra Utshab", "Nazrul Utshob" etc., along with annual cultural programs.

Although all the clubs have different field of activities, they merge in festivals and split the department with colours throughout the years, year after year.
