Indefinite strike starts at BRUR

Officials of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) went on an indefinite strike from February 06, 2017 (Monday) demanding exemplary punishment of a Chhatra League leader who allegedly beat a cook of the university's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.

Md. Rubel, an economics department student and also a BCL leader, on Sunday morning beat Shafiqul Islam, chief cook of Bangabandhu Hall, after the latter denied him serving food free of cost at the hall canteen.

In response, demanding Rubel's punishment, staffs of the university went on an indefinite strike shutting down the hall canteen, leaving 250 resident students of the hall in severe shortage of food.

Staffs of the university alleged that Shafiqul was denied justice by the provost of the hall, after he submitted a written complaint against the BCL leader.

Account BenefitWitnesses and staffs said Rubel came to hall canteen Sunday morning and demanded breakfast for free. After Shafiqul refused to serve, rubel called the cook by names. At one stage he beat shafiqul severely.

Bangabandhu hall cooks said Shafiqul submitted a complaint to the hall provost in black and white. But all the cooks of the hall were forced to resort to the indefinite strike, stopping cooking, after his complaint fell on deaf ears.

Several students of the hall also alleged that some mid-rank BCL leaders often take meal at the canteen without any payment. They do not repay their dues even after repeatedly being asked.
