16 Govt Commercial Institutes become General Colleges

Commercial courses abolished

Diploma-in-Business Studies has been abolished from the country's 16 government commercial colleges through changing them into general colleges.

The concerned informed that the courses have been abolished because the students are not anymore interested in such subjects and in the absence of demand for these subjects.

Dhaka Government Commercial College has been renamed Mohammadpur Government College. Principal of this college Professor Rezaul Karim Ratan said, Diploma-in-Commerce and Diploma-in-Business Studies courses are being abolished and colleges have been changed to general colleges as part of this.

This is a good initiative of the government. We have come up with this demand for a long time. The Education Ministry issued a notification regarding the college name changing on May 12, 2016 (Thursday).

According to the National Education Commission review in 1959, the institutional arrangement to create skilled office staff is absence despite the huge demand for skilled office staffs in public and private offices, industrial and commercial organizations, foreign missions and companies. As a result, functions of the offices were not conducted properly.

Account BenefitFor this reason, the commission realized that the offices of the country will be run smoothly and educated unemployed get jobs if we can produce skilled office staffs. With this goal, the Education Commission in 1959 recommends setting Government Commercial Institutes in the 16 district headquarters.

Based on the recommendation, 16 government commercial institutes were set up from the year 1965 to 1967 with the financial and technical assistance from United States. The institutes were established at Dhaka, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Chittagong, Feni, Comilla, Khulna, Jessore, Kushtia, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra, Pabna, Barisal and Sylhet districts.

A two-year long job-oriented and pragmatic education course after SSC named 'Diploma-in-Commerce', currently named as 'Diploma-in-Business Studies' has been launched in these Commercial Institutes. But the students lose interest even after the course is equivalent to HSC. These institutes are facing students and teachers crisis in the absence of any courses for general students.
