DU Bijoy Ekattor Hall Students Protest Administration's Decision

Students fearing communal clash

Students of all religions are likely to get the residence opportunity at the newly-built residential hall- Bijoy Ekattor of Dhaka University (DU) from next academic year 2015-16.

However, the resident students of that hall protests the decision of administration fearing the decision could be create communal unrest.

In the meantime, during the protest camp in the night, two students were handed over to police after beaten by Chhatra League on suspicion of Shibir. The general students think, BCL leaders create this the incident to cover up the movement by threatening general students.

The sources said that, on 9th July 2015, Professor Dr. Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan applied to the vice-chancellor for place of students from all religions. Discussion on the issue was held at a syndicate meeting on July 13, 2015. At the time, a decision was taken to open the hall for students from all religions.

A letter from sub-register office of the university was sent to the hall provost on August 02, 2015 (Sunday) to take the necessary measures in this regard. Right after that, anger spread among the students.

Account BenefitHowever, the general students demonstrated in the hall in protest of that decision on August 02, 2015 at night. They claim that the decision could be made communal clashes in the hall. A student said, there is Jagannath Hall for the other communities, so it does not make sense to bring them here.

The general students warned about big movement if the decision will not be canceled. According to sources, two students was handed over to the proctorial body on suspicion of Shibir led by the president and general secretary of BCL, Bijoy Ekattor hall unit after the protests at night. Later the proctorial body handed them over to the police.

The arrestees are- first-year student of the Department of History of Islam Manik Hossain (Room No. Padma 10007) and the MBA student of International Business department Md. Hossain (Room No. Padma 4013).
