The new state minister for Posts and Telecommunications Advocate Tarana Halim want to arrange free Wi-Fi at all the public universities.

"The facility will gradually spread to the private universities. It will be more benefited if this facility can be arranged at least in the libraries of the universities", she said.

The State Minister spoke about digitizing the Post Division, and focused on the expansion of e-services and modernization of this sector. She plans to strengthen the only state owned mobile operator TeleTalk and make 3G available to people all across the country.

She claims if this isn't done, then Teletalk will never be able to have a strong foothold and sustain amid the intense competition. Tarana Halim wants to focus more on broadband internet and hopes to provide the service to Unions and Upozilas all across the country with the help of fiber optic cables.

She noted that the Telecommunication Law-2001 needs to be updated as the old law is no longer relevant and will need the introduction of new clauses as technology is rapidly changing. She also plans to strengthen BTRC and BTCL. She mentioned about creating a specialized website where users can ask for their required services and they will be guided accordingly.

The telecom division is spearheading a move to bolster the performance of all five state-owned stakeholders of the industry under a 90-day plan that became effective yesterday.

As part of the plan, the country's lone state-owned mobile operator Teletalk will work to grab 6.5 lakh additional subscribers in the next three months, while Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company will try to boost its countrywide usage by least 15 GBPS, on top of 33 GBPS now.
