The government and private- two types of universities are increasing in Bangladesh with scale. Still a huge number of students are not getting the desired higher education. Universities are not able to make space.

According to statistics of the last ten years, the number of students in higher education level increasing every year. If the situation continues, the small country with large community has to consider the alternate options for the higher education in near future.

The Intelligence Unit of Renowned English magazine the Economist made a report on the model of future higher education in South Asia for the British Council. According to the report, the interest in higher education is increasing Bangladesh and South Asia, so it has to think about new models of higher education there. It may be the online higher education.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Abdul Mannan thinks, it will take time in the context of Bangladesh. It needed the public policy. And also have to observe, the country having or not having the needed technical capability.

He said, a study says, nearly 400 universities will be needed in the next 20-25 years. But there is a limitation of resources. It should be kept in mind to work. The government cannot do it all alone. Private initiative should increase as well as it should be kept in mind that the university is not just buildings. Knowledge creation, storage and distribution system should be available.

By showing his solidarity with the Economist's report, Dhaka University Professor Syed Manjurul Islam said, online is the true potential for the field of higher education in Bangladesh. He urged the government to take into account the importance of this issue and start to act now.

According to the Economist, in this condition, South Asian countries have to start exploring the new concept of higher education. Higher education online or "Massive Open Online Courses (MOOKs)" is one of them.

Already the new system started to be popular in this region, especially in India. The online course (HarvardX) from renowned Harvard University is the proof of that. More than eight percent of the total students in this course from around the world are Indian. Bangladesh and other South Asian countries students are in that course.
