Instability in two govt universities

Two higher education institutions at the two ends of the country become unstable through teachers movements on the outside curriculum issues.

One of the Rajshahi University (RU) teachers who had been recently manhandled by Awami League (AL) men at the Vice-Chancellor's office on April 20, 2015 claimed no such incident occurred, drawing flak from colleagues attending campus protests entering the fourth consecutive day.

Meanwhile, RU correspondents at a human chain in front of the central library threatened initiating "tougher programs" if Rajshahi city unit General Secretary Dablu Sarker did not withdraw the "false, fabricated" defamation case centering a Bangla daily Kaler Kantha report on the AL men's "virulent" behavior.

Editor Emdadul Haque Milon, Rajshahi staff reporter Rafiqul Islam and RU correspondent Rokon Rakib have been accused in the case, filed with the Rajshahi District Judge's Court on April 19, 2015.

The protests demanding punitive measures against the AL men include human chains formed separately by the music and anthropology departments in front of Ismail Hossain Siraji Bhaban. Meanwhile, Rajshahi lawmaker and Workers Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha met the VC and condemned the AL men's behavior and asked all to safeguard RU's autonomous character.

On the other hand, 35 teachers of Sylhet Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on April 20, 2015 resigned from their administrative posts amid a movement demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor.

Account BenefitA pro-Awami League teachers' platform Mahan Muktijuddher Chetonai Udbuddho Shikhok Parishad (MMCSP) launched the movement protesting VC Professor Dr. Aminul Haque Bhuiyan's alleged misbehavior with some teachers on April 13, 2015. The teachers of the platform in an earlier demonstration on April 15, 2015 announced they would resign if the VC did not step down by April 19.

They submitted their resignation letters to the university's registrar Ishfaqul Hossain as per their announcement. Dr. Syed Shamsul Alam, panel convener of MMCSP, said, "The VC on several occasions has insulted the teachers." He said their next programs would be announced later and classes would continue as per the schedule.

Eminent science fiction writer Dr. Zafar Iqbal, who also resigned from his post said, other teachers did not feel honored because of the way the VC behaved with some teachers. I too did not feel honored and took decision to resign. "I believe if VC's are appointed from within the university instead of the current practice of appointing someone from outside, all problems will be solved," said Iqbal who resigned as the director of the institute of information and communication technology.

According to sources in the administration, the chairmen of applied physics, and geography and environment along with some other teachers went to meet the VC without any prior appointment on April 13 to discuss the distribution of classrooms among departments. But the VC did not give them enough time and became embroiled in an argument.
