BRUR crisis not reducing

Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) started journey in 2008, is in deadlock due to not reducing the versatile crisis.

Classes were not held in most departments, four months after the university opened through breaking the locks.

Teachers and students were split into two groups. Teachers Association demanding removal of the VC. On the other hand, a large part of the teachers are in favor of upholding the VC.

Non-permanent officer-employees of Begum Rokeya University have declared the suspension of all administrative activities from November 11, 2014. Sources said the crisis erupted after former Vice-chancellor Professor Abdul Jalil Miah illegally appointed 418 staff members in the university without considering the financial capacity of the institution and approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Though there were 260 UGC approved posts in the university, the former VC of the university appointed a total of 678 staff members including teachers, violating rules that created the problem, sources said. After the departure of former VC Abdul Jalil on May 6, the UGC gave approval of 76 new posts. But, none was appointed in those posts as the varsity was already overstaffed. Now, there are 678 staffs in the institution against 336 UGC-approved positions.

According to the university administration sources, there was complexity of 27 teachers' promotion on the 42nd syndicate meeting on September 30, 2014. Teachers Association was submitted a memorandum to the VC on October 27, 2014 after receiving written complaint from the teachers enjoyed promotion complications and the Association demand reinstate deserving earned benefits within November 30, 2014.

They alleged that the VC appointed his relatives and neighbors to different posts of the university, breaching its rules. Meanwhile, a three-member investigation committee has been formed by the university authority on January 11, 2013 night to probe into the incident of acid attack on the teachers. The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh imposed restrictions on all sorts of appointment at Begum Rokeya University in February 2013.

The first year admission test of BRUR is uncertain due to the current stalemate in the campus. The admission test was not taken in the last year for the academic session 2014-15 due to the continuous agitations of teachers-students, employees-staffs at the university demanding removal of the Vice-Chancellor.

As a result, academic life of about 90 thousand students is currently in uncertainty despite the registration process has been completed. A total of 90 thousand and 402 candidates applied against 1258 seats for Bachelor 1st year admission test of BRUR under the academic session 2014-2015.
