Ban on political activities in SUST

Authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) imposed temporary ban on political activities on the campus.

SUST will reopen on January 18, 2015 after an unscheduled closure of about two months due to campus violence.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the SUST Syndicate held on January 10, 2015 with its Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Aminul Haque in the chair, said SUST registrar Ishfaqul Hossain. As per the decision, the university dormitories will be reopened on January 17, 2015.

The authorities put the temporary ban on political activities of the student organizations. General students are happy with the decision but it could not please the student leaders.

Account BenefitChhatra League and Chhatra Union held processions and protest rallies on the campus defying the ban. Expressing strong resentment and condemning the unilateral decision BCL SUST president requested the varsity administration to lift the ban immediately.

On November 20, 2014, student of a private university and activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Sumon was killed and 17 others were injured in an intra-party clash of the ruling party's student wing over establishing supremacy on the SUST campus. The clash prompted the authorities to declare the university closed sine die.
