Deadlock at BM College

The situation at Barisal Government Brojo Mohun College campus is becoming more tense and complex after classes and offices in the campus continued to be closed till February 04, 2013 following a shutdown in protest at the transfer of its principal, enforced by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

General students and guardians were facing serious problems due to the situation. At the time of visit, there was confusion as to when college premises will open. The more than 125-year-old college now has around 25,000 students studying bachelor's and master's courses in 21 departments and all academic and administrative activities has shut down due to forced shutdown of the campus by BCL faction. The pro-principal activists of BCL faction and their associate on Sunday blocked roads in the campus area and held rally at the Shaheed Minar of the college.

Moin Tushar and Nahid Serniabad, joint conveners of the college unit Chhatra League and leaders of the faction reportedly supported by city mayor Shawkat Hossain Hiron, claimed that their movement demanding withdrawal of the transfer is successful and it will continue till fulfillment of their demands.

The pro-principal BCL activists also held demonstration in front of principal's office urging all to resist joining of the newly appointed principal in the college. The police deployed on the campus remained largely inactive since starting the BCL faction led agitation. Transferred principal of the college Professor Dr. Nani Gopal Das said as per order of the higher authority he has ordered to hand over charges, so from Tuesday vice principal or newly appointed principal will take charge of the BM College campus.
