'Sabash Bangladesh' Monument of RU

`Shaheed Smriti Songrohosala` is an iconic place in the history of Bangladesh. It is the first and only martyr archives among the campuses over the country where various things used by the martyrs are preserved and the ‘Mass Grave yard’ at the eastern part of the campus where the Pakistani Zantas buried freedom fighters till now bearing the history of the liberation war. The splendor of the place can not be matched to anything as its importance being an emblem of our educational tradition can not be observed. It is the part of our history of Rajshahi University and Bangladesh & it continues to play a significant role in educating the students about our freedom.

The building actually comprises a cluster of some hall rooms, built with bricks without any plaster.

Visitors to the place are welcomed by the breathtaking view of the white color building which is surrounded by rich greenly grass and trees.

`Shaheed Smriti Songrohosala` bears the testimony of the people who died for our country in different critical situation.

During the liberation war of the country in 1971 the Pakistani military launched massacre in the educational institutes like Dhaka University, RU and many others. RU bears the history of liberation war till now. After established in 1953, one year later of the great language movement it keeps it voice loud in every aspects of the need of the country. During the movement in 1969 on February 18, the students of the university brought out a protest procession against the unlawful activities of the government. However, the government imposed section 144 in the city.

Professor of the Chemistry Department Dr Shamsuzzoha was killed by the then Pakistani law-enforcing agency. It is considered that professor Dr Shamsuzzoha is the first intellectual martyred in the history of Bangladesh. A residential hall for the male students has been named after Dr Zoha established in the university. Every year February is 18 observed as the teachers’ day in RU to recall the memory of Dr Shamsuzzoha. Besides Dr. Zoha then another three teachers of the RU including associate professor Habibur Rahman of Mathematics Department, professor Sukhranjan Somaddar of Sanskrit Department, professor Mir Abul Quaiyum of Psychology Department and many students and employees have sacrificed their lives during the liberation war in 1971 for the freedom of the nation from the claws of the Pakistani tyranny.

The students of RU played a great role in the history of Bangladesh. In the war of liberation in 1971, the keep the glorious role by laid down their lives. Among the martyred students of the university whose could be identified as second year of commerce group Abdul Mannan Akond, final Year student of Bengali Department Amirul Huda Zinnah, Golam Sarwar Khan Sadhon of M Sc Previous, Prodip Kumar Raha of Chemistry-Honors, Mohammad Ali Khan of Economics, Shahjahan Ali of Honors, Mizanul Haque of M Sc of Physics Department respectively.

Among the officers of RU who laid down their lives during the liberation war in 1971 can identified as Abdur Razzak worked as night guard-administrative building, Steno typist Sheikh Emaz Uddin administration section, SM Saiful Islam of accounts section officer, Kalim Uddin (Asst. Engineer section), Mohonlal (Sweeper), Abul Ali (Driver), Shafiqur Rahman worked as Carpenter, Noor Miah as night guard, bearer Mohammad Yousuf Ali of V-C office, M Wazed Ali worked in Controller section, bearer Abdul Malek in Department of Law, Md. Afzal Mredha as night guard in V-C office and bearer Wahab Ali in proctor office respectively. Besides them Curator Monsur Ahmed and guard Hossain Ali died after the war bearing the hit of liberation war.

During April in 1971, the Pakistani military entered in the Rajshahi region and laid a strong center at existing Zoha Hall in RU. They took a hard situation in the university and led their destructive activities in nearby region of the city.

There are 15 freedom fighters in RU till now serving the university and as well as the nation from holding their own respective post. They built an organization “Muktijoddha Command Council” at RU to get the proper rights of the freedom fighters and to protest the illegal activities of the university administration. They want a beautiful Bangladesh where there is no discrimination and inequality. The university authority started an award for the freedom fighters of the university in 2006 for the special contribution in the liberation war. The four-freedom fighters awarded in 2006 for the first time are including Azizul Haque who is now working as driver, Abdul Hannan as bearer Hobibur hall, Enal Ali as night guard steward section, Badrul Alam as assistant engineer section.

Among them Professor Shamsul Alam Birprotik, teacher of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Ibn Golam Samad known as an educationist and social worker, ANM Saleh working at RU BNCC commander till now also awarded by the university authorities. The commander of RU Muktijoddha command council Abul Kalam Azad who is now assistant registrar, Institute of Bangladesh Studies bade thanks to the university authorities for the award and expects a well honour to the freedom fighters.

Recollecting the memory of the fighting scenario of liberation war and the dream of the country freedom fighter Abul Kalam Azad also the commander of RU Unit muktijoddha sangsad said that, “We fight for a peaceful poverty and exploitation country but that remains a dream after 41years of the independence of the nation.
