Slowness in campus shifting

In December 2010, the Ministry of Education was given a deadline till September 2011 for shifting the permanent campus of private universities to their own land.

At that time, 43 of the 54 universities was not having their own campuses. Later, most of them took the initiative to set up campus after purchasing the land. But after almost four years, most of the universities are not shifted to the permanent campuses yet. Allegedly, a lot of private university authorities have no interest in this.

At last, the Ministry has issued a new deadline to shift the campuses in September of current year. But it was found in search that most universities will not be able to go to the permanent campus in this period. Most of the universities have completed their responsibilities by purchasing lands.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, I have the information about 28 universities already moved to the permanent campuses. Some universities will be moved soon. Action under the law will be taken against them who cannot be moved to the permanent campus within the deadline. There is no chance of concession. Currently there are 83 private universities in the country.

According to the latest report of University Grants Commission (UGC), so far only 19 private universities are able to go to permanent campuses among the 54 private universities established before passing the Private University Act 2010. 4 universities own campus under construction, 21 universities bought the land for the university's campus, but not started to build infrastructure.

Mainly these universities are operating their educational activities in the capital city and operating only one or two semesters in the permanent campus.

According to the Private University Act 2010, the permanent campus has to operate in the government decided land after temporarily establishing the university to take Certificate. The government will be canceled the temporary permit and announce the closure of the university, if any do not receive the certificate in the prescribed time.

The sources said, almost every universities among the 54 universities exceeds 7 years of age. For that reason, the government may close down those universities which do not follow the Private University Act 2010. Because, government has given the opportunities to those universities several times to go to the permanent campus.
