Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification, is the direct human manipulation of an organism's genome using modern DNA technology. It involves the introduction of foreign DNA or synthetic genes into the organism of interest. Genetic engineering has given us the power to alter the very basis of life on earth.

Human cloning is a type of genetic engineering, but is not the same as true genetic manipulation. In human cloning, the aim is to duplicate the genes of an existing person so that an identical set is inside a human egg.

In Bangladesh & world wide, Genetic engineering has applications in medicine, research, industry & agriculture and can be used on a wide range of plants, animals and micro organism. And it has more fields in biotechnology like Animal Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Molecular Biotechnology & Fisheries Biotechnology. Humans have altered the genomes of species for thousands of years through artificial selection and more recently mutagenesis. We are not also so far behind from the others.

If you wanted to be a famous genetic engineer in the near future then there are many opportunities for you in Bangladesh. Among the public universities Dhaka University (DU), Islamic university (IU), Jessore Science & Technology University (JSTU), Khulna University (KU), Mawlana Bhasani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Rajshahi University (RU), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) & University of Chittagong (CU) contains genetic engineering subject in Bachelor Level. You can also acquire Master’s & M.Phil degree in this subject from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Dhaka University (DU), Khulna University (KU), Rajshahi University (RU), University of Chittagong (CU), Islamic University(IU) .

Among the private universities only Stamford University Bangladesh and University of Development Alternative (UODA) has this subject. Eligible students can also get the master’s degree from UODA in this subject.
