Shuttle Train, Zupri & CU Campus...

A Scenery of Chittagong University

It is summer, hot & broad month. The days are long and humid. The fountain shrinks and black crows gorge on bright mangoes in still, dust green trees. The stunning rays of summer sun beats upon the red bricked cafeteria walls. I sit down over the entrance to the central library. Shuttle train comes. A day ends with incessant gossips, clueless chatters; loud hard rock song in ‘zupri’. That is a typical day of Chittagong University.

The campus turns on immodest green. The faculties domed mountain on a hill. Whistling train that thrills a student, snatch it to go back to town. Night’s shadows melt over them in eternal tranquility. The worm starts screaming behind trees around the hill. Whole situation turns on a quite bubble floating on a sea of noise.

The day starts with different beats for students of different departments. If you think what is special about Chittagong University, invariably, it is the shuttle train. In Bangladesh, it is the only university which has a shuttle train. Students of CU travel by the shuttle train to come to the campus and go back home. The journey takes a new meaning and shape when it comes to the campus. It becomes symbols of youth. You may hear loud hard rock songs with beating walls of train. Notable singer S.I.Totul and Partho Barua were two of them who used to enjoy beating. It turns into a bit nightmare for the newcomer. The exhausted fresher’s failed to catch their breath.

Zupri is a most exciting part of CU. Students beat table and sing. It comes with exhausted sighs and exhalations of relief in a day of boring classes. The tables are full of with card players and irrelevantly chattering, laughing and munching students. From politics, philosophy, religion, literature… the topics are enormously versatile!

Along with all these haste and hurry, a wide range of activities of different clubs run on all around the year. Flurries of enthusiastic activists circle around departments celebrating their respective days. CUDS and BSD organize several workshops. Project exhibition, conference, international seminar, cultural festivals, job fair, gaming competition, photography exhibition, and film festival these range of activities are as diverse as it can be.

Life in the residential halls really has very different flavor. There are ten halls, seven for male and other for female. Most of the student lives in city, 22 k.m. far from campus. Indoor games, group discussion, adda make everyone busy in the hall. Solitary guitar or violin is heard. Groups are seen at the Sahid Minar or Central Field in the mid night of the campus. The shops, teaming with students - even one or two at night hums with gossip and laughter. Someone have a cup of tea and run again to rooms for studying.

Forty six years has elapsed since its inception. The heart of CU throbs high all along. It is nurtured by this life with deep, Comprehensive hits of hurry contrasting with light, thin shades of jovial and cheery respite.

The road we have traveled all these years has, for reasons we are only too aware of, lengthened it. Our aspirations to democracy, our dreams of prosperity and, overall, our goal of carving a respectable nice for the country.. it urges to carry on the legacy. The legacy of country service, precise knowledge and excellence’s sends out the thought that when 71’s liberation war is fought and won, there are many others waiting to be surmounted.
