Like students of any other discipline, law students also often find it hard to come to term with some questions, like 'what are we going to do after graduation? What my fellow students are thinking?' From such an urge of getting united, sharing ideas and experiences, a group of law students came together and formed an association named Bangladesh Law Students' Association (BDSA) recently.

Since long it was just a dream because law students have not had any organisation which can articulate their thoughts and ideas to the proper authority in a befitting manner. This whole idea of forming the association was twirling in our mind for months. At one stage we could bear no more thoughts and jump into action.

And thus the long cherished desire to make a unique platform for law students has come true. We a group of students from Dhaka University has initiated it. Later other institutions joined with us.

In Bangladesh L.L.B degree is the only gateway for a student to be a legal practitioner. The academic system allows two separate systems of qualifying legal degrees. First one is the college-oriented two year LL.B. (Pass) degree and the other one is the mainstream University-based four-year LL.B. (Hons) degree. Recently there has been a new trend of obtaining foreign academic LL.B. degrees through External System (especially from the UK).

There are six public (govt. run) universities which offer four-year LL.B. (Hons), along with about thirty other private universities. Besides, the National University of Bangladesh and a number of govt. and private law colleges offer two year LL.B. (Pass) degrees. A few (not more than eight) institutions recently started offering three Year LL.B (Hons) degrees under University of London External Programs. However, Bangladesh Law Students’ Association (BDLSA) have already established its network in 14 Law Schools of Bangladesh, so far, including in four public universities, seven private Universities and three law colleges (UK LL.B).

BDLSA aims to improve legal education to a global standard and to enhance aspirant lawyers' professional skills as well. The Association will hold seminars, workshops, competitions, film festivals, summer camps and many other such programs on a regular basis. A Working Teams headed by a convener are striving for spreading the organisation among general law students in every campuses.

So far, the association has launched programs like National Legal Essay Writing Competition and is scheduled to arrange a Legal Film Festival in August and a National Moot Court Competition in September.
