An aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) is a licensed person who carries out aircraft maintenance. This same title is used in a number of different countries. To become a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) you are required to meet the examination and experience requirements. An AME license requires both practical experience and examination passes. You can sit the examinations at any time, although having some practical experience already is advisable.
AMEs retains their regency by completing maintenance or related work. Aircraft mechanics, aircraft inspectors, maintenance engineers and technicians maintain, repair, overhaul, modify, and test aircraft structures, mechanical, and hydraulic systems; Troubleshoot aircraft systems to identify problems and adjust and repair; Install or modify aircraft engines, mechanical, hydraulic, flight control, fuel, and pneumatic systems; Order and maintain inventory of parts and supplies; inspect structural and mechanical systems of aircraft and ensure that these systems meet Transport Canada and company standards of performance and safety.
They also conduct maintenance, modification and repairs of aircraft engines and aircraft components, including critical control system maintenance, Conduct pre-flight examinations and assessments of aircraft engine and other associated mechanical systems, Examine aircraft engines for malfunctions, Maintain tools and work environment, Observe strict OH&S guidelines, policies & procedures and Perform material and component testing including modification and repairs to all engine systems and parts.
