University of Melbourne

How is the Melbourne University for Higher Studies? Actually every foreign study seeker knows that.

The university has been placed top in Australia by the Times Higher Education Rankings (2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2012–2013), HEEACT (Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan), and Academic Ranking of World Universities (2011 and 2012). The latest Rankings of Times Higher Education ranked The University of Melbourne Number 28th in the world, up from 37 last year, ranked number two in the Asia region and 31st in the world by QS 2011-2012 ranking. Many Bangladeshi students are studying there recently and they are doing really well.

Some of them are working at various institutes in Australia, Some came back to serve the motherland. But 2011 was really special for the Bangladeshi students of this university. Because university students organization Graduate Student Association (GSA) found its first president Ziauddin Ahmed who is Bangladeshi. It is great achievement for Bangladeshi students to place themselves in leading position in the highway of international students.

GSA is the student representative body for postgraduates at the University of Melbourne. GSA has over 13,000 members including all Graduate Diploma, Postgrad Diploma, Masters, PhD and other doctoral students. GSA speaks up within the University and in the wider community to help postgraduates and improve postgraduate education, research and welfare.

GSA is governed by a Council of 19 students, elected by the postgraduate student body. GSA is an incorporated association, fully independent of the University, the School of Graduate Studies and from the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU).

In 2012, GSA made a concerted effort to engage and support coursework and research graduate students. This entailed engaging with students from all graduate schools and faculties, studying full-time and part-time at Parkville and non-Parkville campuses, and across all equity groups (international graduate students, LGBTI identified graduate students, women graduate students and indigenous graduate students).

A number of new initiatives were introduced to broaden and deepen engagement with graduate students across the University. These included –

* The appointment of an Outreach Officer to liaise with and support graduate students at non-Parkville campuses and locations;
* Funding symposiums at campuses and locations other than Parkville, including the inaugural SOBR Students of Brain Research symposium and the POVS Postgraduates of Veterinary Science symposium at Werribee ;
* Adding De Minimis, the JD Law Students' journal to the suite of graduate student publications funded by GSA;
* The engagement of a new editor for the GSA refereed journal, Traffic to conduct writing workshops at non-Parkville locations, in addition to their editorial duties;
* Funded and published two anthologies of Traffic, one of which was devoted to Women centered issues;
* Partnering with the School of Culture and Communication to create a paid internship program for graduate student editors to edit and publish the two annual editions of the GSA journal, Plane Tree;
* The introduction of Sexual Health Seminars to the events schedule for female graduate students;
* Co-hosting the Victorian Welcome to students from Africa for the Australia Awards for Africa program sponsored by AusAid;
* Increasing available funding for Graduate Student Groups;
* Hosting a new mega after-hours event for representatives of all GSA affiliated Graduate Student Groups across the University;
* Extending the short course program for the statistical package, to meet increasing graduate student (and University staff member) need;
* Establishing the Graduate Student of the Year Award, presented in 2012 by the Governor of Victoria.

In GSA, many Bangladeshi students were elected in different important posts.
