No Shaheed Minar at 680 Schools, Colleges and Madrasas of Kushtia!!!

No Shaheed Minar at 680 Institutions

No Shaheed Minar at 680 Institutions

Located near the Dhaka Medical College in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the national monument known as Shaheed Minar, was established in memory of those who were killed during the 1952 Bengali Language Movement demonstrations.

The Bengali Language Movement was formed as a political effort to advocate the recognition of the Bengali language as one of Pakistan's official languages. At that time Bangladesh was East Pakistan and the Government of Pakistan had declared Urdu to be the sole national language, which the Bengali-speaking majority in the area objected to. In the face of rising sectarian tensions, the government put a ban on public meetings and rallies. Defying the ban, students of the University of Dhaka, along with other political activists, organized a protest to take place on 21 February 1952. Police opened fire on the protestors, resulting in dozens of deaths.

It is simply shocking to know that in this country of the great language movement a staggering number of educational institutions in a single district have no Shaheed Minars (monuments for the martyrs of the language movement). Most of the institutions in Kushtia district do not have the structures in their playgrounds for the teachers and students to pay tribute to the language martyrs. Quoting district education office sources the reports says that a total of 680 schools, colleges and madrasas out of 750 in six upazilas of the district have no Shaheed Minars. Despite unanimity among the teachers, students, education officers and bureaucrats about the necessity of Minars at educational institutions the authorities of those academies, for mysterious reasons, refrained from constructing the structures. When this is the picture of a single district, it is not hard to imagine the situation all over the country.

The great language movement of the 1950s is an inalienable part and glorious chapter of our national history. The struggle for the protection of Bangla as its immediate objective laid the foundation of the nationalist movement and ultimately paved the way for the establishment of a separate homeland for the people of East Bengal, now Bangladesh. These struggles and sacrifice for language secured for the country a prestigious position in the comity of nations. It is impossible to write down the history of the country without recording the annals of the language movement. Thus, Shaheed Minars that symbolize our respect for and gratitude to the fallen warriors of the language movement always served as beacons and sources of inspiration in our troubled moments. Gathering at the Shaheed Minars and paying tribute to the martyrs in a body with others not only inspire younger generations to know their glorious past but also imbibe them with love for the country. The institutions that do not have Shaheed Minars deprive the young of their first lessons to become worthy citizens of the country.

Though having a Shaheed Minar is not mandatory for an educational institution it is very much in line with the spirit of the Language Movement and expectation of the entire nation. The authorities of those institutions in Kushtia and elsewhere in the country should take serious note of the stake. This has become all the more important when anti-liberation and fanatic forces dare to dishonor the nation's sense of prestige. শিক্ষা সংক্রান্ত খবরাখবর নিয়মিত পেতে রেজিস্ট্রেশন করুন অথবা Log In করুন।
