Wi-Fi at RU | First Step of Making Digital Campus
A popular magazine of USA has published a survey report on 6 November 2010, which said, "Wi-Fi helps college students to get better grades."
The research was conducted among 550 college and university students of the USA. Nearly 75% students said that Wi-Fi on the campus helps them to get better grades. 48% students said that they can even give up the beer but not Wi-Fi. This was the condition of college students of 2011 in America. We can see what the condition of our college and university students is. For making a statistics, first we will go to our Rajshahi University campuses.
Real-estate companies, in most recent times, added Wi-Fi with other facilities to their residential flats and they mention it in their advertisements very attractively. Seeing this sort of advertisement, a residential student of Rajshahi University expresses his regret that "we don't get Wi-Fi in our hall, though this facility is available in a rich man's flat". What a harsh reality it is! It's true that Rajshahi University has Wi-Fi, but the coverage is very limited.
Though the Introducing of Wi-Fi facilities at the vintage points of Rajshahi University campus has brought remarkable change in the academic activities of the students helping them broader access to internet and online learning. Be it the T-20 Cricket match or paying your utility bill, everything in the world is getting faster than ever before. Say, you are on campus and you suddenly remember you have an assignment to submit. You are working on it, with the pressure of time constraint building, when you figure out a number of vital information is not provided and without which you cannot proceed with the rest of the problem. Certainly, there is the computer lab or the colossal library you can get the information from, but either the labs are too crowded or you don't have enough time to delve into the library books. But if the campus supports its own Wi-Fi internet connection, VOILA! You can get the required information without having to go anywhere.
Shemul Hasan, a student of Department of Marketing , urged the RU authorities to extend this free Internet zone over the whole campus while Nayan Biswas, a student of Department of Zoology, said the Wi-Fi technology has paved the ways to be introduced with a cyber world and get information from the whole world.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abdus Sobhan said Wi-Fi technology eased the expansion of information and helping the students getting information easily as well.
"Information is not confined in particular area and it's open for all due to information technology like Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi technology has been introduced in most of the area of the university to ensure more access of the RU students to the information and communication technology. We are working for expanding this technology in the whole campus, all the halls, institutes and faculties soon," said Professor Sobhan.
He, however, observed that online learning can not be the substitute of library.
"Importance of library can not be ignored because printed books are more enjoyable than the computer based on-line learning," he said advising the students to spend at least one hour everyday in the libraries.
"Digital Campus is the first step for digital Bangladesh". We all know that, nowadays internet is so essential that if student don't use internet in their study, research and regular activities, they will fail to keep up with the times. It is clear that internet obviously helps the university students to get better grades and helps them to keep pace with the current world. When US college student couldn't think of days without Wi-Fi 2010, what about our college students in 2013? A Bangla daily has given the answer in its report on - '32,000 colleges and 29,000 schools have no internet'. It is not necessary to describe where our university students can not get proper internet facilities; hence the college is out of count.
It's true that internet based activities or the concept of digital campus, we have only acquired them in recent years, and some works have started by providing Wi-Fi, but the initiative is very slow. Our speed is not satisfactory compared to other countries. It seems that most of the activities are pending for our leaders' and administrative persons’ promise.শিক্ষা সংক্রান্ত খবরাখবর নিয়মিত পেতে রেজিস্ট্রেশন করুন অথবা Log In করুন।
