Foreign Students Losing Interest

The number of foreign students in the public universities of Bangladesh is on the decline. It indicates to the constant deterioration of the educational environment of the universities which is being considered by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a drawback in ensuring quality education at our premier seats of learning. The situation needs to be addressed immediately.

The news story cited a report of the UGC on the activities of the public universities in 2011 that showed that from 2010 to 2011, the number of foreign students in the universities decreased by 149.

Bangladesh was once the prime attraction of the students hailing from South and South-East Asian countries for higher education. A good number of foreign students thronged Dhaka University which was then popularly known as the Oxford of the East taking into consideration its quality of education and high profile teaching staff. The number of foreign students studying in other seats of higher education in the country was also not nominal.

Students from Malaysia, Thailand and Nepal used to come in Bangladesh to accomplish their graduation degree and diversified researches. But these are now the sweet stories of the bygone days. The glorious past only signifies our bleak present. While the Asian countries have developed their educational sector with huge investments over the years and receiving a section of Bangladeshi students instead of sending their own; the higher educational institutions of our country, especially the public universities, have now turned into centers of ugly student politics and big employment houses dedicated to appoint teachers and staff on political consideration. There are ample allegations that a section of teachers of our public universities are now more interested in political sycophancy and private consultancy than in teaching and research work.

Because of the serious session jams in the universities a large number of students are wasting the golden time of their life in politics and hooliganism instead of preparing themselves to face the challenges of a highly competitive globalized world. How can this environment attract foreign students where, there have reasons to be worried about, they might even lose their valuable lives on such unstable campuses? Therefore, it is not only a matter of the quality of our higher education, but also the reputation of the entire country. As the decrease in the number of foreign students in public universities seems to be due to a downfall of quality in education, only the reversal of the same can revamp the situation.
